One man is suing Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles after his wife died giving birth. The child, who is now a healthy 3-year-old, was birthed by routine cesarean section. He says while standing and holding her hand during the procedure, he tried to tell doctors that something was wrong. Their response was that she was “not a priority right now.”
The man says his pleas were continually ignored by medical staff as the new mother’s health continued to decline. She was finally taken back into surgery around 12:30 a.m. the following morning, where she eventually died.
After her death, the man began to research mortality rates among new mothers. What he found was shocking. By his counts, approximately 700 women die after childbirth in the U.S. each year. It is a maternal mortality crisis that should not be happening in the country with one of the most advanced healthcare systems in the world. However, due to unequal healthcare and inattentive medical staff, it continues. He has since made it his mission to push for policy change which will allow hospitals and doctors to be held accountable for these actions.
Suing a major medical center is a very complex and drawn-out matter. If you or someone you love has been injured, or even died, due to the negligence or malpractice of a medical professional, you may have a valid case. It is of the utmost importance that you consult with an experienced attorney as soon as possible after the event both in order to preserve evidence and to get the ball rolling while all parties’ whereabouts are still known. Medical malpractice cases can offer substantial compensation to assist in any necessary ongoing treatment, or to allow a grieving spouse or family member to pick up the pieces and move forward.
