A Cannondale Cyclocross CAADX bicycle, which has caused several riders’ injuries and at least one person’s death, was recalled in late July.
According to the press release about the recall, the bike manufacturer detailed how defective forks were identified as likely causing the one fatal and 10 other accidents with non-fatal injuries that have occurred worldwide in recent years.
In their statement, they noted that they’ve recently tested this feature on their bikes. They note that they didn’t find anything defective on them. They noted that they decided to issue the recall out of an abundance of caution to reduce the potential for any further catastrophic accidents.
There are just under 10,000 Cannondale Cyclocross CAADX bikes that were sold worldwide by the manufacturer and at authorized retailers in between August 2012 and August 2017. The model years for these bikes ranged from 2013 to 2016.
These hybrid on- and off-road bicycles came in a variety of colors, but all featured prominent CAADX and ULTRA X markings on them. They all had a cable that was routed outside the fork to the front disc brake. The bike retailed for as much as $2,000.
At least seven of the bicyclists that were hurt while riding these bikes have been able to attribute their injuries to its broken fork component. The affected riders have suffered a multitude of injuries including spinal cord damage and concussions. It’s unclear what led up to the fatally wounded bicyclist’s death.
